The tyranny of distance has diminished and we now find ourselves in the right place to build business opportunities and strengthen relationships with the world's largest middle class. Responding to this global change, the Australian Government has a plan - The Asian Business Engagement Plan (ABE).

The objective of the plan is to assist Australian member-based business organisations, and through them, small and medium-sized enterprises, to harness the opportunities emerging in the Asian region.

Plant Exports National Documentation Hub and Plant Exports Management System (PEMS)

The Department of Agriculture is improving the documentation process for plant exports. The Plant Exports National Documentation Hub is being established in Melbourne to make the documentation process more efficient. In addition, a new IT system—the Plant Exports Management System (PEMS) is being released to reduce the average documentation time for inspections and to make the export process more efficient.

Sterile Insect Technology Initiative

Today the South Australia Government made a commitment to build a fit-for-purpose Sterile Insect Technology (SIT) facility in Upper Spencer Gulf at a cost of $3 million.  The SA Government has also signed an MOU with a research consortium involving Horticulture Australia Ltd, the CSIRO Biosecurity Flagship and Plant and Food Research Australia to invest approximately $15 million over 5 years to develop a male only line of sterile Queensland Fruit Fly (Q-fly) and sterile fly management solution packages for use across the horticulture production areas of Australia. This research consortium is to be inclusive and additional research organisations and agencies will be approached about partnering in this exciting development.
